Gum Disease
Gum Disease is also known as Periodontal Disease. It is a very common condition where the gums become swollen, sore or infected. If you have gum disease your gums may bleed when you brush your teeth and you may have bad breath.
The early stages of gum disease is called Gingivitis. In healthy mouths, where the gums and teeth meet, there is a small pocket of approximately 2mm. When bacteria or debris such as plaque develop in this pocket it causes inflammation which causes the gums to bleed when we brush our teeth. Gingivitis is easily reversible by tweaking how you brush your teeth. We can help, please ask us at your next appointment.
If plaque is left and not removed by your Dentist or Hygienist, gingivitis can progress to Periodontitis (gum disease). This is where the bone holding your teeth in moves away from the area of inflammation and infection thus causing your teeth to become mobile. Although we can’t rebuild the bone we can stabilise it and regular appointments with our hygienists are so important for this.
