Swelling

Swelling is most commonly a sign of infection and/or inflammation. The location of the swelling and how it feels is actually very important.

If you have swelling that is visible from outside of the mouth this is often called facial swelling.

If you have facial swelling that extends to;

♦ The Eye to the point where you cannot open it

♦ The Neck and starts to spread under you chin

♦ Under you tongue, pushing your tongue upwards

♦ Any swelling that is affecting your ability to swallow or breathe

Swelling inside the Mouth

A small hard swelling on the gum/ a gumboil is usually associated with an infection in a tooth nearby, they can be pain less and sometimes go unnoticed.

Pain

♦ Take pain relief as and when required, follow this link for advice on Pain

♦ Rinse the mouth with warm, salty water at least 4 times a day

♦ If you have Corsodyl Mouthwash, use this as well as the warm, salty water mouthiness, at a separate time to brushing

♦ If the pain does not resolve, contact the Urgent Dental Care Centre to make an appointment

No Pain

♦ Rinse your mouth with warm, salty water at least 4 times a day

♦ If you have Corsodyl mouthwash, you can use this at a separate time to brushing as well as the salty water

♦ Contact our practice once we are open again for us to investigate and treat appropriately

Swelling visible from outside the Mouth

Pain

♦ Take pain relief as and when required, for more information on Pain

♦ Contact Appletree Dental Surgery between the hours 8.30am – 10am Monday to Friday to obtain some antibiotics and advice

♦ Rinse your mouth at least 4 times a day with warm, salty water

♦ If you have Corsodyl mouthwash then use this as well, twice a day, at a separate time to brushing your teeth

No Pain

Contact Appletree Dental Surgery between the hours 8.30am – 10am Monday to Friday to obtain some antibiotics and advice

♦ Rinse your mouth at least 4 times a day with warm, salty water

♦ If you have Corsodyl mouthwash then use this as well, twice a day, at a separate time to brushing your teeth

It will take at least 48hours for the antibiotics to start taking effect.

Other than the discomfort, swelling isn’t really anything to worry about, you may find ice also helps soothe the area.
